Most of its territory encompasses one of the country's most important tropical dry forest ecosystems: the Tatacoa Desert. It is considered a region of interest because its soil and subsoil are rich in paleontological history; its geographical and astronomical location allows for excellent visibility of outer space. Furthermore, its flora and fauna have developed unique characteristics, and its soils, although generally eroded, are important for the development of life.[5] It is known as "The Paleontological and Astronomical Capital of Huila and of Colombia."
